The Kay Musical Instrument Company started to break out of their previous lineup of acoustics to offer something with more attitude. This example, in 00-size, offers a nice balance between parlor and big-body flat top from the same period. The short scale length delivers a robust tone and easy fretting whether played fingerstyle or flat picked. Good value for and American made flattop from this period.
SPECS: 00-Size, 12-fret neck with slotted headstock, ladder-braced solid spruce book-matched top, birch sides and back, maple neck in charcoal stained finish, adjustable 2-way truss rod, MOP fretboard inlays with corresponding side dots, vintage tuning machines, full “D" neck profile, original braz. rosewood fretboard with original brass frets, new rosewood pin bridge, binding on top and back, original rosette, repurposed bone pins, nut and saddle. Nut width: 1 3/4”, String spacing 2 5/16”, Scale length 24 1/4”, upper bout 11”, lower bout 14 1/2”, body length 18 1/8”, Overall length 37 1/2”, Depth at end block 3 7/8”, Neck depth at 1st fret 13/16”, Neck depth at 5th fret 7/8” Action: 3/32”-1/8” customer’s choice, string gauge setup: Custom Light gauge in standard tuning.
CONDITION: Complete shop rebuild using original and repurposed woods with upgrades as noted. Relic finish retained. Mostly original, upgrades included top bracing, bridge with compensated saddle slot and adjustable truss rod. Finish touchups and setup. Please note that vintage, used or repurposed materials will have underlying swirls, scrapes, scratches, bumps and bruises. Any new elements/features added during the rebuild were made to fit in with the old.
SOUND: Rich vintage tone is enhanced by a body size that is slightly longer and deeper than true parlor guitars. Setup currently accommodates fingerstyle, flat picking and light strumming. I can adjust the setup for a more aggressive attack at the customer's request.
